This state-of-the-art marina is a lovely Wisconsin weekend
getaway.
by Patti McCleery
If you plan to cruise the western shoreline of Lake Michigan this
summer, be sure to spend a night or two in Manitowoc. The home of
famed Burger Boats, Manitowoc, Wisconsin, is located between Two
Rivers to the north and Sheboygen to the south. Many boaters are
surprised when they see this state-of-the-art marina tucked away
in these quiet, beautiful surroundings.
Manitowoc Marina is a $7 million complex opened in 1985 by Sailboats,
Inc. of Superior Wisconsin. The marina offers 250 deep water slips
that can accomodate boats up to 100 feet in length.
Should problems arise while you are in the area, not to worry
- the full-service repair facility will be there to remedy the situation.
They do it all!
Manitowoc is a terrific weekend getaway for boaters in the Chicago
and Milwaukee areas who are looking to escape the noise and hubbub
of the big city. It's also a good stopping point for those heading
to or coming from Door County.
The marina is within walking distance of downtown, where there
are several good restaurants and, or course, shopping. If you wish
to grill your own dinner, there are picnic areas at the marina.
If you're looking for a little exercise, take a stroll along the
riverwalk. Boaters with pets will find the dogwalk area handy.
For maritime history buffs, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum is within
a block of the marina. You can take a tour of the U.S.S. Cobia,
a World War II submarine. Children and adults alike will be charmed
by the museum's model ship gallery.
While you are out enjoying the sights be sure and stop by the
Beernsten Confectionary, an old-fashioned candy store with the kitchen
located on the premises. After you have added a few calories sampling
some of the sweets, you can get weighed and have your fortune told
for a penny!
The Chicago Tribune rated Manitowoc Marina the finest marina
on Lake Michigan. It is a terrific place for a weekend stop (they
take advance reservations) or a permanent summer home for your boat.
Be sure to give them a call before you arrive.
